Should War Be Televised
Thank you so much for putting my article on the main page! I am a middle school-er and i was having some extreme problems researching that topic!
You can put me down for internship, but I can't guarantee 8 hours a week - I have other things to do. Matt 05:24, 28 May 2009 (CDT)
Nuclear test ban treaty
Yes I would be able to do that (but not right now)but can you just have a look at the structure of the page. It doesn't look right. Matt 18:54, 12 June 2009 (CDT)
Just to say hi
Hi Brooks Lindsay, I see you have a very successful site going. Actually like Jake, we are facing the same problems, i.e. not much technical know-how, and marketing is a problem. You have solved both of these by collaborating with William Wnekowicz and the International Debate Education Association (IDEA).
I actually started a similar site two years ago because I enjoy intellectual debates. Luckily my attempt failed miserably, otherwise I would have wasted a lot of time. No way I can beat your combination of skills and resources. Your site will trash me to pieces, LOL. Also, your name, Brooks Shields, ooophs, I mean Lindsay Lovelace, oppphhh... I mean Brooks Lindsay, does sound good. It really does make a difference in the internet. — Ekompute 04:36, 15 June 2009 (CDT)

Thanks for the advice
I'll be sure to exercise better word economics in the future. I wasn't sure about the exact paradigm I was supposed to follow so I went overboard trying to make sure I accomplished what I was supposed to. Thanks, Ali Breland
Can you take a look at this?
I have been creating an argument page (your recommendation) and have been having a hard time getting the sub-questions to fill the whole screen left-to-right...it only does half the page...
Thanks for any help. --StudentCongress 21:23, 30 June 2009 (CDT)
Move of my comments re Falklands/Nootka
Thanks for the welcome. My worry about your move of my comments is that it might make it more likely that fewer people will read them. Dab14763 23:42, 5 July 2009 (CDT)
Thanks Brooks. However, the section you've headlined "Supporting Quotations" was not written by me and was there before I wrote my piece, so it is a separate argument from mine.
Sorry, I've jsut been too busy lately to make any progress so I'm not sure that being an intern is going to work. Matt 23:15, 6 July 2009 (CDT)
On the debate page about Mars or the Moon mission i noticed how you made the subquestion title misc. arguments to be organized soon. Well i saw that and i decided to try and save you some work. So i tried my best to organize the misc. arguments. --StudentCongress 07:31, 26 July 2009 (CDT)
Thanks : )
Point taken! i will keep that in mind))
cheers Elena Isac 19:46, 26 July 2009 (CDT)
- nuclear sustainability - that's fine. i guess it's better this way
- single-sex schools - most of the arguments are already written in some form, but i'll have a closer look on them
anyway, i will do this the next days. TODAY we have re elections in Moldova. Maybe you've heard about the elections in April, when we had a Parliament in fire. well, we vote today again. and tomorrow we find out the results. it's a really big thing here. and i hope the communists don't win.
here's a link, if interested: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8173649.stm
but after the results, i'll get back to editing:)
cheers! Elena Isac 07:00, 29 July 2009 (CDT)
yep! the title works i actually wanted to ask you how to change the name, to make the capital letter and so. but you did so it's fine. however the page is not finished yet.

Deletion of an (empty) debate
I'd like to ask - is it possible to delete a debate? I've accidentaly created a new debate "Debate: space based solar power", but there is already "Debate: Space-based solar power" and I don't want to duplicate it.
--Renergy 09:09, 4 August 2009 (CDT)
videos and others
i updated the video section according to your suggestion. also, i've put your video which is in the external links, in the pro/con videos section, cause it takes one side. i dont know if you agree with this. it is up to you where it stays, so just remove it from the section you want.
cheers, Elena Isac 18:42, 12 August 2009 (CDT)
I recently posted a new subquestion/subpoint about the Debate: Civil unions vs. gay marriage because i felt that there was a point the either had been overlooked or forgotten.
This issue is the "separation of church and state" and you can find my argument against the gay marriage side on the subquestion which is 2nd from the bottom.
Thanks, --StudentCongress 23:51, 16 August 2009 (CDT)
I'm on to that issue of the calorie count article
Issues with the cost of calories
I'm going to be honest, I spent around an hour, if not more scouring the internet for more cost articles, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding things. I'll keep looking, but I doubt I'll be able to find much more. Sorry.
Yes, I would love to! I will start right away tomorrow morning. Lenka Habetinova, 22:12, 28 August 2009
There are dozens and dozens of categories. Is it our aim to do away with those that contain only one debate or those that exist two of almost the same name e.g. "Air Travel" and "Air travel"? Or should I focus on something else like rewriting categories in debate sites?
Lenka Habetinova, 11:15, 29 August 2009
Re: Editing others work
OK, I will work on that as well. Enjoy your journey :)

Deleting empty argument pages
Hey, I was deleting those pages because when you said that "generally they should not exist", I thought it better to delete at least some of them. (Personally, when I was just an ordinary visitor of Debatepedia, I always found it a bit irritating to follow a link "to nowhere". Just my opinion.) Sorry, we must have got our wires crossed. I will focus on categories again. Best,

"Non-covered" page count
Brooks, looking at your last memo on Lenka's talk page - um, well, I know it wasn't for me - anyway what popped into my mind immediately is that this is just the kind of attitude the US goverment/FED (other governments too) is exhibiting these days. Just issue some non-covered money for the reports to look good (or at least not so bad). Just my two cents. Regards, -- Renergy 12:36, 28 September 2009 (CDT)
Rating/voting system for arguments
Hey Brooks, another thing that crossed my mind (hopefully a positive and creative one now): I think it would be quite useful to have a rating/voting system for arguments/debates here on Debatepedia, as is usual in discussions on number of other servers. Because on some debates, there are arguments which are clearly wrong (in my opinion), yet I want to leave theme in the debate, because they represent the way some people think; I would only like to mark them like "invalid", "wrong", "misleading" - or "sound", "good" on the other hand. The rating system on slashdot.org is a good inspiration IMO - check out e.g. the comments here - the classification of comments as Interesting, Informative, Insightful, Funny... I realize this would require quite substantial modification to the wiki technology. Just wanted to share the idea.
Best regards, -- Renergy 16:44, 28 September 2009 (CDT)
Empty argument pages
Okay, I will carry on with deleting those empty pages plus links to them. Glad to have your approval :)
Just by the way, as I am looking above this post, the voting system Renergy proposes sounds interesting... :)

Thanks for the compliment. By the way, how can you tell who made which edits? This is meant to be a comment like the ones you put on my page but I'm not sure if I'm doing it right.
Thank you :)
Thanks, I am honoured. Debatepedia editing might be a time-consuming work, but one can see the difference. Almost like "Yes, we can." .)
Best regards, Lenka 18:25, 8 October 2009
Brooks, I think that debates like that (I mean the whole "Debates for fun" category) should be seen as a mean to improve, enliven Debatepedia; they are like pepper and salt of this site. Btw, another pun name came to my mind, that could attract some people today, namely various government officials, even Nobel laureates: Debtpedia. All the best, -- Renergy 04:21, 11 October 2009 (CDT)
Response to generous proposal
Hi. I'm the newman Voltaire. I've seen your compliments and genuinely appreciates the fact that the founder of Debatepedia has complimented me on my arguments. You've asked me to become an editor of Debatepedia. The answer is:.....YES!!I'm a fan of both Wikipedia and Debatepedia and I would gladly contribute to make Debatepedia into a better forum. Sincerely, --Voltaire 07:50, 18 October 2009 (CDT)
Re: "playful" debates
Hi Brooks, well, I understand your point completely. Guess what - you're the boss here :) Feel free to delete any of my extravagant contributions. Best regards, -- Renergy 14:09, 18 October 2009 (CDT)
Thanks for editing and helping
Brooks, thanks for helping such an insignificant rookie so much.... Also thanks for making such a helpful suggestion. Bye--Voltaire 08:41, 20 October 2009 (CDT)
Debating is not a hobby, it is a lifestyle
Hey, this weekend I went to a debate tournament in the Czech Republic and I was awarded "The best speaker of the Czech Debate League" prize - which is great. But what is even better, this tournament was quite inspiring (that's how the debate about Barack Obama's Nobel Peace Prize and the one about gov. spending came to life). To cut a long story short - I'm fine, enjoying autumn holidays, working on competitive debates... :)
Anyways, how have you been? I've noticed that many new editors have joined - that's great news!
Best, Lenka Habetinova, 19:37, 29th October 2009
Re: How's it going?
Hi Brooks, I'm fine, thanks for asking. Yeah, not on the Moon (yet), still in the Czech Republic. A bit busy at work, but, hey, better than being unemployed. The downside is that I don't contribute much to debates here these days. About the weather - well, I've seen clearer sky, but for an autumn day, it's decent. Not too cold, not too rainy, only a slight breeze. Well, Lenka, she has these holidays, lucky her :) When I was in her years, I think they were not here yet, or actually they appeared during the period I was on high school, I'm not sure though. Anyway I do remember that at the elementary school there was not a single extra holiday between September and christmas, only weekends (we don't celebrate Thanksgivings, unfortunately); it was a bit frustrating. These young people, everything is easier for them!
Again, thanks for asking, best wishes to DC -- Renergy 17:21, 29 October 2009 (CDT)
Re: And all that jazz (work?)
Thanks, it was great to be among the best. Actually, I debate in both languages (frankly, sometimes it is much easier for me to express myself in English rather than in Czech - I call it a "debater´s syndrome").
Weather is fine - sometimes sunny, sometimes windy - simply autumn. A good excuse to spend all day in bed with a notebook, to be honest :D
And yeah - I am looking forward to seeing those photos! Facebook indeed IS evil, but sometimes it is the only way to keep in touch with friends from all around the world.
Anyways - happy Halloween :)
Best, Lenka Habetinova, 30th October, 12:34, 2009
Yeah, I see what you mean Brooks, giving thanks to being able to put food in ones stomach while invigorating spirit surfing in Portugal/Spain is fine. Best wishes to achieve the increased traffic here. -- Renergy 04:49, 31 October 2009 (CDT)
Hey. I've been a bit depressed lately because I've moved to London recently and moving sucks (and I'm still getting used to my parents being split up). Plus I don't really have many friends here. Hence why I haven't really been adding anything (also the massive debate on capitalism vs socialism kind of burnt me out). But I'm ok now. How have you been?
I will probably add something about what countries should be doing in the Congo soon because I'm doing research for an article I'm going to write for Corporate Watch about how British corporations are prolonging the conflict and are involved in human rights abuses. The reports that I'm using for research are are so long! So I might be a week or 2.
Re: Recent changes
Thanks for the suggestions. I have some friends in the anarchist movement around London but they are all in their 20s or older. I have trouble making friends my age. How have you been? And what have you been doing?
Traffic at Debatepedia
Hi Brooks, how's it going? I mean - is the traffic here increasing, nearing your desired 7000 unique hits a day? I've noticed that the Debatepedia's homepage crossed the total of 2,000,000 hits recently, which is not exactly bad I would say (ok, it would be still better if that would be the daily hit count... ;-). Btw, I've added you to my facebook recently, it's still "friend request pending". Anyway, just wanted to say hi. Best, -- Adam Purkrt / Renergy 01:31, 23 November 2009 (CST)
Comments on "intercategorization" I've done yesterday
Hi Brooks, thanks for your kind words. I have tried yesterday to mutually interconnect categories - i.e. to categorize categories. Actually, in the end, I realized that it is nothing else but creating links between categories - the plus being that there now automagically appears "Subcategories" list (alphabetically ordered). "Sibling categories" might be a better title for this list, since e.g. I made Category:Aviation a subcategory of Category:Airplanes and vice versa. This leads to a web-like structure, that is more suitable to organize data in some cases than a tree-like one, I'd say. Um, I'm not writing anything new, I have actually read much similar contemplation in Feynman's The Character of Physical Law. So I have just discovered America - in my own way ;-)
Happy Thanksgiving, -- Renergy 13:30, 25 November 2009 (CST)
Hi Brooks, I have extended the Editing tasks at your request. I am definitely interested in this "Founding Brothers" book, hopefully I will find some time to read it in the near future. And I definitely recommend you the The Character of Physical Law by Richard P. Feynman, as well as his other books. The one I like the most (and the first I have read from him) is "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!". It is a great fun and a real pleasure to read. It was a late afternoon the day I got that book into my hands for the first time, and I could not stop reading it throughout the whole night. I have read it a couple of times since (both in the Czech language and in English), and I am returning to it until now.
Sure, I will try to do something about the structure and quotes. I will try to find a special article on this in one of older issues of The Economist - I remeber reading it several times.

Re: Some comments
I understand and I have changed it. Also, I have recently written a long essay on hoe British corporations are fuelling, and profiting from the war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. http://www.zcommunications.org/znet/viewArticle/23166 How could I use this information to start up a debate? - User:Liberationfromwithin
Yeah, that is good. Thank you. I will add to it in the next few days. I also have a couple of other ideas for debates to start up. I am quite busy right now but in the next few days I will work on the Congo one and add 2 others (I will keep what they are as a surprise for now). User:Liberationfromwithin.
Re: More comments
Thank you for your compliments. they are very much appreciated :) I will try to cut my arguments down and make them more accessible and consistent with the format, but it is hard. I'm kind of OCD about proving stuff. But I will try. "Liberationfromwithin 18:18, 2 December 2009 (CST)"
Re: On the format
Yeah I think it will, If I can motivate myself enough to work more.
Thank you, that would be very much appreciated. How would you help?
Thank you. Is there a way I can set it so I get an email when someone adds something to a debate that I am involved in?
Here is where I keep most of my articles: http://www.zcommunications.org/zspace/liberationfromwithin Some are more worked on than others.
Have you looked at my articles yet?
And also, there is no-one really debating me on most of the debates that I have added to. Is there anything that can be done about this?
Recent changes, etc.
Yes, you are right, I should spend more time developing new arguments and cooperating with other editors. I will try to focus on that. Thanks for your feedback :)
Lenka, 19:28, 15th December, 2009
Happy New Year
Thanks Brooks :)

Re: Welcome (Mason11987)
- Thanks Brooks, I've had this idea for a wiki site for a while but it's always seemed just too messy. The templates you're using (and mods I assume) all make it very easy to focus on ideas instead of wiki-syntax. Even though I love the latter it's a barrier to entry for a lot of users. I've been admin/bureaucrat at several different similar sized wikis where I normally focus on organization and planning, as well as using templates for a lot of interesting things. I'll be looking more into the site sometime later this week to see if there is any place where I could provide some value.
Just to kick off my assistance I always found it extremely useful if people added a talk link (and optionally a contributions link) to their signature in order to make conversations easier. I've modified my signature like so: Mason11987 (Talk)
In case you're interested I figured I'd set you up with the same, just go to your preferences and check "Raw signature" and paste this into your nickname:
